Step 5: Photograph Everything
Before you mop, before you move anything you do not have to move: photos and video. Wide shots of each affected room, close-ups of the source, the water line on the wall, the wet flooring, damaged contents.
If this becomes an insurance claim, this is the most valuable thing you will do all day. Adjusters work from evidence, and "it was much worse before we cleaned up" is not evidence.
Water Heater Leaks Specifically
A leaking water heater is the most common after-hours call we take, and it has its own short sequence. On a tank unit, close the cold water inlet valve on top — that alone stops most of it. Turn the power or gas off, then open a hot water tap somewhere in the house to break the vacuum so the tank drains down instead of holding pressure. On a tankless unit, close both isolation valves and cut power.

Backups and Sewage Are Different
If sewage is coming up through tubs, showers or floor drains, treat it as a health hazard, not a mess. Stop using every fixture in the house immediately — every flush and every load of laundry adds to what is backing up. Keep children and pets out of the affected area.

If You Smell Gas
Leave. Do not flip switches, do not use your phone inside, do not look for the source. Get everyone out, then call the gas company from outside. Plumbing can wait; this cannot.
